James & Bakerview Roundabout & other King Mountain Neighborhood Updates

info248064

Hey neighbors,

You may have noticed that King Mountain Neighborhood is undergoing a lot of housing development these days, especially on the north end. As is the way with publicly funded projects, road and trail work are, and will be, following.

Please know, the KMNA board is scheduling community meetings for early this year with the City of Bellingham Public Works Department, the Parks Department & Greenways Council so that we can all learn more about what's happening directly from the experts.

Until then, we've got a few updates we wanted to share.

Those of you frequenting the intersection at James St. and Bakerview Rd. may have noticed Faber construction out and about this last week. Faber was officially awarded the J & B roundabout project at the end of 2024. Along with that decision, city council issued a noise variance which will allow Faber Construction to work 24hrs/day for 50 days. We were told this variance was passed in an attempt to cut the construction time (and ensuing inconvenience) in half. We were also assured that Faber would be considerate about the type of work being done during nighttime hours, typically keeping the loudest tasks for daytime. Still, our hearts go out to you neighbors living closest to the intersection!

Construction on the intersection is expected to begin in the spring of 2025. As neighbors, we would also like to bring attention to the reality that storm water improvements along Meridian will be on going throughout 2025. We should anticipate traffic on the northside of Bellingham to be impacted by these two major projects. Here's to hoping we can all be patient together as 2025 unfolds!

James St. Multi-modal trail:

Yes, the long promised James St. Multimodal trail now has a Public Works project page which can be viewed here. Public Works plans to collect neighborhood input on the trail design at a neighborhood meeting sometime soon. Stay tuned for details. As a board, we'd like acknowledge that this is stage 3 & 4 of the multimodal trail (ie. the northernmost portion). The southern portions remain on the T.I.P but are unfunded :(. While no replacement for the James st. Multimodal trail, significant strides have been made to secure land and funding for north-south connector trails to the east and west of James St in our neighborhood. It is acknowledged by CoB officials that recent input from King Mountain neighbors palyed a significant role in focussing attention and funds on these trail connections. Your voices of concern were heard. Updates on those trail connections are laid out in our previous blog posting available here. We can expect more updates at a yet to be scheduled neighborhood meeting with the Parks department. Stay tuned!

Creston Way & multimodal trail:

The Creston Way project connecting a northern extension of James St to Kellogg Rd. is expected to complete sometime this Spring. Part of this project includes a multimodal trail reaching up toward Van Wyck Park and the King Mountain Community Garden. We look forward to more community usage of both as access becomes easier!

p.s. The garden had a successful first season in 2024. There are more garden plots available for the 2025 season. You can read-up and register here: King Mountain Community Garden.

That's all for now, neighbors.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you soon!
